PPPGA Professional Grooming Standards
PPPGA aims to promote consistent, humane, and professional grooming practices that prioritize animal welfare, safety, hygiene, and quality of service.
1. Animal Welfare and Humane Handling
- Treat every animal with patience, kindness, and respect.
- Assess the pet’s temperament and condition before grooming.
- Never use unnecessary force, intimidation, or punishment.
- Stop grooming if the animal shows significant distress or requires veterinary attention.
2. Hygiene and Sanitation
- Clean and disinfect grooming tools between pets.
- Maintain clean grooming tables, tubs, and work surfaces.
- Use clean towels and appropriate grooming equipment.
- Follow proper hand hygiene and waste disposal procedures.
3. Groomer Safety
- Use equipment safely and maintain it in good working condition.
- Use appropriate restraints without compromising animal welfare.
- Maintain safe handling practices for anxious or aggressive pets.
- Report injuries, incidents, and equipment hazards.
4. Grooming Quality
- Discuss the requested grooming style with the pet owner.
- Assess coat condition, matting, skin, nails, and ears before service.
- Explain limitations and risks before proceeding.
- Perform a final quality check before returning the pet.
5. Professional Ethics
- Communicate honestly and respectfully with customers.
- Obtain informed consent before grooming.
- Protect customer information and pet records.
- Never misrepresent qualifications or certification status.
6. Salon Standards
PPPGA’s proposed salon accreditation framework will assess hygiene, equipment, animal handling, staff competency, customer consent, safety procedures, and recordkeeping.
Accreditation will be subject to a defined assessment process and formal approval by the association.
